Gather Networking Info

What is Gather?

All GDC Showcase virtual networking sessions are hosted on the Gather platform. Gather is a video chat platform that allows users to connect, collaborate, and interact in real-time, real-world simulated environments.

How does Gather work?

Gather uses a combination of peer-to-peer video conferencing, 2D graphics, and spatial audio to create an interactive virtual space. Users can seamlessly move in and out of the venue, explore rooms, and chat with other participants through spatial-proximity audio and video features.

How should I prepare?

To prepare for GDC Showcase, you need to create an account on the Gather website. As of current, Gather is best run on Google Chrome and Firefox via desktop. The next step is to customize your avatar’s body, clothing, and accessories to your liking. Once you’re ready to continue, select Join the Gathering.

Warning: You must grant permission for Gather to use your camera and mic in the browser. You will see a pop-up asking for permission to use your camera and microphone. Select Allow to get the full networking experience.

How do I navigate the platform?

You can move your avatar by using the arrow keys or the WASD keys on your computer’s keyboard. You may also double click on the Map to automatically move to a location. To find someone, click on the Participants list and select their name to Locate on Map or Follow. You can also right click on a character to move to them, follow them, request to lead them, start a bubble with them, or send them a direct message.

Tip: Press “z” to dance or “f” to throw confetti!

How do I interact with others?

There are two main ways to interact with others in the Gather space.

  1. Video chat: If an avatar is within your interaction distance, a window with their video/audio will pop up on your screen and your conversation can begin. If you would prefer to hold a private conversation or limit the number of interactions while networking, you can sit in the designated private spaces.
  2. Message chat: Under the Chat pane, you can read and send messages while you are in the Space. You may send a message to every person currently in the Room, everyone standing within your interaction distance or private area, and/or a person you select.

How do I manage my A/V settings?

When you enter the space, you will be presented a Check Your Hair screen, which will give you a preview of your avatar, video feed, and the A/V selections for your camera, mic, and speakers. To manage your devices and A/V, select the User tab in Settings, then select Audio / Video
