Game Design Career Fireside with Raph Koster with Bryant Francis
Time: 9:55am - 10:25am PT
Description: In this fireside chat, Game Developer senior editor Bryant Francis interviews Raph Koster, CEO of Playable Worlds, Inc. who has worked at EA, Sony, and Disney, and served as lead designer and director for titles like Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. They’ll discuss his career as a top game designer, what’s changed in the field since he wrote his classic book A Theory of Fun for Game Design, and what it’s like to have run his own company… twice.
User Interface in 'Cyberpunk 2077': Challenges and Optimizations
Time: 10:30am - 11:30am PT
Description: Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Project RED's biggest game to date. This talk looks back at how user interface technology was built for this title from scratch, what challenges the development team faced during the production, and how they solved certain problems and optimized the whole system to support thousands of independent UI instances around Night City. It shows how the user interface eluded standard usage patterns and was used for gameplay purposes that are unique for Cyberpunk 2077. The talk describes pipelines and tricks that were used to fit the whole user interface system into performance budgets and make it possible to launch on targeted platforms.
Classic Game Postmortem: Fallout (GDC 2012)
Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm PT
Description: It's changed developers' hands several times, switched perspectives, and jumped from turn-based to real-time gameplay, but the Fallout series' survival and consistently high quality games are a testament to the original's strengths. The first Fallout offered players a post-apocalyptic open world filled with distinctive characters, moral dilemmas, and quests that could be solved in multiple, oftentimes unconventional ways. Timothy Cain, who was the producer, lead programmer, and one of the primary designers for the beloved game, will deliver a talk on how he helped create a franchise that set a new standard for open-world RPGs and still resonates with players.
Vault Rewind: Growing an Internet Cult: 'Cult of the Lamb's' Social Strategy (GDC 2023)
Time: 4:20pm - 5:05pm PT
Description: One of the biggest games of 2022 came from an extremely small development team. Cult of the Lamb raced past 1 million copies sold in 10 days and despite being a surprise to some, it was certainly no accident.
Jared J. Tan, Devolver Digital's Community Strategist, will discuss how the development team created meme-able moments and an iconic art-style by thinking about marketing from the start. He'll detail how he harnessed those elements while blending creative content and social media analytics to grow a culturally relevant gaming brand.
After-Hours Entertainment with Extra Lives
Time: 5:05pm - 6:05pm PT
Description: In this After-Hours Entertainment event, Extra Lives will delight the GDC Showcase audience with a virtual version of their latest Audience RPG, Extra Lives' Summer Vacation. This interactive comedy adventure was a hit at GDC 2023 back in March and--with over 60 possible variations to the story depending on the audience's decisions--the experience regularly serves up new twists and turns. As always, a live band will score the tale with classic video game console themes. We'll deliver the whole experience over Zoom and the audience will be able to influence the story from the comfort of home by voting via QR code.
It's all part of GDC Showcase, an online event happening June 27-29 dedicated to bringing 3 days of great content and networking to the global game dev community.
