Creating Memorable Moments in Video Games

Fawzi Mesmar (VP Global Creative, Ubisoft)

Time: 8:00 am - 8:50 am

In this keynote, Fawzi will go over the psychology of how players and people generally recall experiences and form memories, and identify what makes moments memorable and meaningful.

By conducting that analysis, he goes through methods to be able to deliberately be able to create moments that players will resonate with for a long time.

Build Your Promotability or Honor Your Values? Why Not Both!

Sonia Michaels (Career Development Coach / Consultant, Independent)

Time: 8:55 am - 9:25 am

In games, as in many other industries, there's a pervasive mythos that "It's a dog eat dog world." And sometimes, as we watch the layoff notices pile up, we start to believe that. But fortunately, life is not a zero sum game. It is absolutely possible to build a long, healthy career in the game industry by creating opportunities for yourself and for others, by raising your own voice and amplifying marginalized voices, and by caring about both profits and people. Will this approach lead to endless riches? Almost certainly not. But it should lead you to a long and healthy career that you can actually enjoy.

More 'Getting Hired with a Personal Touch': The Side Door

David Ventura (Creative Director / CEO, Ichigoichie)

Time: 10:40 am - 11:10 am

Getting hired is tough! Hiring is tough! The global pandemic and rise of AI has thrown even more roadblocks into the process of helping companies acquire new talent. There are lots of ways for your budding job application to die on the vine, and almost all of them are about communication. In this talk, a 15-year recruiting veteran follows up on their GDC 2024 talk, revisiting some the key steps on your journey to getting employed, and adding some new tactics to make a personal connection and avoid being stonewalled by an AI filter.

The talk provides examples taken from hundreds of anonymized job applications and conversations had with other recruiters, providing insight to how applications are received and opinions formed. New topics covered include professional networking, changing industries/disciplines, and handling successive interviews.

It's all part of GDC Showcase, an online event happening Sept. 19-20, all about helping game developers take their careers to new heights.
